lemon:value deu “Die eigentliche Herkunft des Wortes ist unsicher. Einige Varianten vermuten eine arabische Herkunft, wie etwa mahyah (Prahlerei), oder auch mûafâ ( mû = Mut und afât = beschützen). Nach einer anderen Variante leitet sich das Wort von Ma afir ab, einem sarazenischen Geschlecht, das von 831 bis 1072 in Palermo regierte. Andere Historiker sehen den Ursprung in den Anfangsbuchstaben des Schlachtrufes „Morte Alla Francia, Italia Anela“ („Den Tod Frankreichs ersehnt sich Italien“), mit dem sich Kämpfer in Palermo auf ihre Besatzer stürzten. Eine andere Umschreibung lautet „Morte Ai Francesi, Invasori, Assasini“. Zufriedenstellend geklärt werden konnte die Herkunft des Begriffes bis heute nicht. Im Jahre 1868 taucht das Wort Mafia aber erstmals in einem sizilianisch-italienischen Wörterbuch auf und wird dort als Synonym für Camorra benannt.”
